Ancient Plovdiv
The old town of Plovdiv is a unique vivid town organism. It is a combination of archeological sites, museums, galleries with valuable exhibits, ancient buildings, churches with rich pictorial and woodcarving decorations and church plates, cozy cafes and restaurants, schools, older and newer houses with romantic yards, picturesque cobblestone streets. On the territory of the ancient Trimontium (the Three Hills) have been preserved significant monuments of the antiquity - remains of the acropolis, the Classical theatre, the Stadium, the Classical forum. The Old Town reveals also the overall development in architecture of houses from the time of the Bulgarian National Revival after 19th century. In 1979 the European Gold Medal for protecting the monuments of culture was awarded to the Old Town of Plovdiv. The Ancient Plovdiv is included in the indicative list of UNESCO in 2004.
